FAQs

  • A GFCI, or Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter, is a safety device that helps protect people from electrical shock. It works by constantly monitoring the flow of electricity in a circuit. If it senses even a small difference in the current between the hot and neutral wires—often a sign that electricity is leaking, possibly through a person—it quickly shuts off power to prevent harm. GFCIs are typically installed in areas where water and electricity are likely to meet, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor spaces.

  • If you're wondering whether your electrical outlet might be burning, there are a few warning signs to watch for. A noticeable burning smell near the outlet, visible discoloration or scorch marks, or the outlet feeling warm or hot to the touch are all signs of potential danger. You may also hear buzzing or crackling sounds or see small sparks when plugging or unplugging devices. Another red flag is if the outlet frequently causes your circuit breaker to trip. These symptoms can indicate overheating, a short circuit, or other electrical issues that pose a serious fire risk. If you notice any of these signs, stop using the outlet immediately, shut off power to the area at the breaker box, and contact us for to get it inspected and repaired.

  • A blown fuse and a tripped circuit breaker both signal an electrical issue, but they operate in different ways. A fuse contains a thin strip of metal that melts when too much current flows through it, breaking the circuit and stopping the flow of electricity. Once a fuse blows, it cannot be reused and must be replaced. In contrast, a circuit breaker is a resettable switch that automatically shuts off when it detects an overload or short circuit. To restore power, you simply flip the breaker back to the "on" position, making it a more convenient and reusable option.

  • Have you noticed that some or all of your lights are flickering? While it’s often just a loose or faulty lightbulb, flickering lights can sometimes point to a more serious—and potentially dangerous—electrical issue. Keep reading to explore possible causes behind flickering lights, brought to you by the professionals at Dement Electrical Services.
